A Journalist's Exclusive Journey: Life and Operations on Vietnam's Kỳ 1 Oil Rig

In my entire journalism career, few opportunities have been as remarkable as the chance to spend three full days on an offshore oil rig. Even more fortuitous was that during this brief period, I witnessed a major maintenance operation at the Sư Tử Trắng (White Lion) production platform while simultaneously observing the operations of the PV DRILLING I exploration rig.

This proved to be an unforgettable experience, not merely due to the unique seascape of the open waters but also because of the complexity and scale of oil and gas operations in Vietnam. The Sư Tử Trắng area is considered the "golden mine" of Vietnam's oil and gas sector, boasting abundant oil and gas reserves. Extraction operations here not only generate substantial revenue for the national budget but also contribute significantly to the country's energy security.

Major Maintenance Operation at the Sư Tử Trắng Production Platform

During my time on the oil rig, a major maintenance operation was underway at the Sư Tử Trắng production platform. This periodic yet large-scale operation required the coordination of hundreds of engineers and workers.

The maintenance work included:

The PV DRILLING I rig has the capability to drill at great depths, reaching over 10,000 feet below the seabed. This represents leading-edge technology in the region, enabling exploration of oil and gas layers at depths that older rigs cannot access.

What impressed me most was the scientific and disciplined work procedures on the rig. All operations are conducted according to standardized procedures, with close supervision by the technical team. Mr. Nguyễn Văn Hùng, Director of the PV DRILLING I rig, stated: "Workplace safety is always our top priority on the rig. All workers must undergo rigorous safety training and operational procedures before boarding."

Challenges in Oil Rig Operations

Working on the Kỳ 1 oil rig presents numerous challenges, particularly under the harsh conditions of open waters. I witnessed a small storm approaching and observed how the oil rig responded to this situation.

"We constantly monitor weather forecasts closely. When storms approach, we implement safety measures such as securing the rig's anchors, retrieving outdoor equipment, and preparing for evacuation if necessary," explained one rig engineer.

Daily Life for Workers on the Oil Rig

Another interesting aspect I observed was the daily life of workers on the rig. Despite working in challenging conditions, they still engage in recreational activities after work hours, such as watching movies, playing sports, and communicating with family via satellite internet.

"We work in shifts, with each shift lasting 12 hours. Although our rest time is limited, we always try to cherish every moment," shared Lê Văn Nam, a rig worker.
