A leaked report has revealed that Britain's push to reach net zero could leave the country facing higher electricity bills and more vulnerable to blackouts. The report was produced by energy consultancy Cornwall Insight for the National Energy System Operator (Neso) and shared with The Times by a whistleblower.
The whistleblower warns that Neso, the government-owned entity, is "flying blind, every minute of every day" in its understanding of energy supply and demand. "We are risking a complete blackout," they said.
The report revealed serious problems
The report found that Neso cannot accurately map the modern energy system amid the government's push for green energy. Inaccurate energy forecasts are increasing costs for consumers and making it difficult for Neso to prevent blackouts.
The leaker said the nation's grid engineers "have been raising these issues for two years now" but operators are "too politically scared to say that renewables are making the system unsafe".

In the report, the energy consultancy said that the rise of renewable energy sources such as wind farms, solar panels and batteries has provided grid operators with "reduced visibility into the capacity being delivered to and taken from the UK national grid", complicating the ability to forecast supply and demand.

Extreme weather puts pressure on the system
The report was completed just weeks before Britain's heatwave in June, and since then Neso has warned that "extreme temperatures" could impact electricity supplies as household use of fans and air conditioning puts record pressure on the grid.
The night announcement, broadcast by Neso on July 9, called on energy companies to generate additional electricity supply to meet demand during the heatwave. It is the energy operator's second warning in a month, as the group was forced to call for more electricity during the June heatwave, which saw temperatures hit a record 37.7°C.
