Petrovietnam and Canada Forge Strategic Energy Cooperation

Hanoi, July 10, 2023 - As Vietnam intensifies its development of clean energy and energy transition, the Vietnam National Oil and Gas Group (Petrovietnam) held a significant meeting with Canadian counterparts, opening up strategic cooperation opportunities between the two countries in the energy sector.

High-Level Meeting Discusses Energy Collaboration

On July 10 in Hanoi, Mr. Le Manh Cuong, General Director of Petrovietnam, met with His Excellency Jim Nickel, Canadian Ambassador to Vietnam. The meeting took place in a friendly and open atmosphere, marking a new step in energy cooperation relations between the two nations.

During the working session, both sides discussed potential cooperation in various energy sectors, particularly renewable energy development, liquefied natural gas (LNG) technology, and clean energy transition. The Canadian Ambassador expressed special interest in supporting Vietnam in its energy transition process, currently one of the top priorities of the Vietnamese government.

Potential Areas for Cooperation

Petrovietnam and Canadian representatives discussed several potential cooperation areas, including:

  • Renewable Energy Development: Collaboration in wind power, solar power projects, and other advanced renewable energy technologies.
  • Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG):strong> Canada possesses extensive experience in the LNG sector, an important transitional energy solution for Vietnam.
  • Energy-Saving Technologies: Technology transfer and experience sharing in efficient energy management.
  • Human Resource Training:
  • Cooperation in training energy experts for Vietnam.
  • Research and Development: Collaborative research on new energy technologies, particularly green hydrogen technology.

Significance of Cooperation with Canada

Vietnam is currently in a critical energy transition phase, with a target to achieve net zero emissions by 2050. Canada, with its experience in clean energy development and advanced technologies, can become a key strategic partner for Vietnam in this process.

"We highly appreciate Canada's experience and technology in the clean energy sector. Cooperation with Canada will help Petrovietnam and Vietnam's energy industry access advanced technologies, contributing to the successful implementation of Vietnam's emission reduction commitments," said Mr. Le Manh Cuong, General Director of Petrovietnam, during the meeting.

Future Cooperation Plans

Both sides agreed to enhance information exchange and explore specific cooperation opportunities. Petrovietnam will send a working delegation to Canada in the near future to survey energy technologies and effective development models in the country. Meanwhile, the Canadian side expressed readiness to support Vietnam through technical cooperation and training programs.

Ambassador Jim Nickel emphasized: "Canada is always ready to share experience and cooperate with Vietnam in the clean energy sector. We believe that cooperation between our two countries will bring mutual benefits, contributing to global sustainable development goals."
