EVNGENCO3 Intensifies Efforts to Ensure Electricity Supply During Hot Season 2026

EVNGENCO3 Units Intensify Electricity Supply Efforts During Hot Season 2026

In the face of increasing challenges in load management during the dry season and intensifying heatwaves due to climate change and geopolitical impacts, member units of Power Generation Corporation 3 (EVNGENCO3) are implementing decisive measures to ensure power plant operations remain safe and stable, optimally meeting the national electricity system's demand.

The Challenging Context

Over recent periods, Vietnam has continuously confronted unprecedented heatwaves that place significant pressure on the electricity system. According to meteorological forecasts, the 2026 hot season is expected to be more severe, with average temperatures increasing by 1-2°C compared to historical averages. Additionally, regional and global geopolitical situations remain potentially unstable, affecting the supply of coal—the primary fuel for thermal power plants.

In this context, ensuring national energy security has become an urgent task, requiring synchronized efforts from all electricity sector units, with EVNGENCO3 playing a crucial role as one of Vietnam's largest power generation corporations under the Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN).

Role and Responsibilities of EVNGENCO3

EVNGENCO3 operates under EVN, managing and operating 11 power plants with a total installed capacity of approximately 4,560 MW, accounting for about 10% of the national electricity system's total installed capacity. The corporation's member units include:

  • Hoa Binh Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Son La Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Lai Chau Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Hoa Binh Expansion Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Tuyen Quang Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Bac Hung Hai Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Tri An Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Da Nhim - Ham Thuan Bac Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Ialy Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Song Tranh Hydroelectric Power Company Limited
  • Song Bung 2 Hydroelectric Power Company Limited

Implemented Solutions

To ensure stable electricity supply during the 2026 hot season, EVNGENCO3 member units have implemented numerous synchronized solutions:

1. Optimizing Power Plant Operations

Units have developed detailed operational plans, rationally allocating capacity among power plants while maximizing available water resources in reservoirs. Forecasting and water regulation work is conducted frequently, ensuring a balance between electricity generation and other needs such as irrigation and flood prevention.

2. Enhancing Maintenance and Repair

Before the dry season, units have conducted comprehensive equipment and turbine inspections. Major repair work has been completed in the shortest possible time, ensuring all turbines are ready for high-capacity operation when needed.

3. Promoting Energy Efficiency

EVNGENCO3 member units have implemented various on-site energy efficiency solutions, including optimizing automatic control systems, improving operational processes, and using energy-saving equipment.

4. Securing Coal Supply

For thermal power plants, ensuring stable coal supply is vital. Units have proactively developed coal import plans, diversified supply sources, and strengthened cooperation with domestic and international suppliers.

Achieved Results

EVNGENCO3's efforts have yielded positive results. In the first half of 2026, the total electricity generation of member units reached nearly 14 billion kWh, a 5% increase compared to the same period in 2025.

The maximum operating capacity of hydroelectric power plants exceeded 4,000 MW, effectively meeting peak load demands. Particularly during high-temperature periods in April and May 2026, units maintained stable capacity, significantly contributing to national energy security.

Future Plans and Strategic Directions

To continue ensuring energy security amid increasingly complex climate change, EVNGENCO3 has identified sustainable development with the following key priorities:

  • Strengthening the application of digital technology and artificial intelligence in power plant management and operations to improve efficiency and minimize risks.
  • Investing in upgrading and modernizing old power plants to increase electricity production efficiency.
  • Developing renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power in combination with hydroelectric power to create a diverse and flexible electricity system.
  • Enhancing international cooperation in the energy sector, learning from advanced operational management experiences.

Conclusion

EVNGENCO3 member units are tirelessly working to ensure stable electricity supply during the 2026 hot season. The synchronized and decisive solutions, combined with the high sense of responsibility from the team of officials and employees, have significantly contributed to ensuring national energy security, serving socio-economic development and improving people's living standards.

In the context of increasingly severe climate change and energy challenges, continuously innovating and improving the efficiency of power plant management and operations remains a constant and urgent task, requiring the efforts of the entire electricity sector, particularly EVNGENCO3.
