If the Quang Trach LNG project is only a few months behind schedule, will the Central and Northern power systems face the risk of power shortage during the period of strong demand growth after 2029?
On June 17, 2026, Vietnam Electricity Group EVN and Vietnam Gas Corporation PV GAS held an online meeting to review the progress of the LNG liquefied natural gas supply project for Quang Trach 2 and Quang Trach 3 Thermal Power Plants.
This is considered one of the most important links in Vietnam's energy transition strategy as LNG is gradually becoming a bridge fuel source between traditional coal power and renewable energy.
QUANG TRACH 2 CAN GAS FROM APRIL 2029
According to the plan announced by EVN, Quang Trach 2 Thermal Power Plant will begin needing LNG gas to serve test runs from April 2029.
This means that the entire project chain from LNG warehouse, regasification system, distribution station, gas pipeline to related technical items must be completed synchronously before this time.
PV GAS said it is being completedFS feasibility study report and expected to submit to the Ministry of Industry and Trade in August 2026.

The parties conducted a field survey at Quang Trach Electricity Center to determine the location of pipelines, gas receiving and distribution stations, and agreed on technical data for detailed design.

In the context of wind and solar power increasingly accounting for a large proportion, LNG gas power plants are considered to have the ability to operate more flexibly thanwith coal power, and at the same time significantly lower emissions.

The meeting on June 17, 2026 showed that EVN and PV GAS are strengthening coordination in all three areas of engineering, investment and trade to avoid the situation where the plant is completed but there is no gas or vice versa.
If all progress is kept as planned, Quang Trach 2 and Quang Trach 3 will become one of the largest LNG gas power centers in Vietnam, making an important contribution to ensuring power sources for economic development in the new period.
